Top 10 Technical Achievements in Chest Wall Surgery in China in FY2023
2024-05-06

In the year of 2023, with the joint efforts of chest wall surgery colleagues across the country, the construction of the discipline has achieved fruitful results. After strict screening by technical experts of China Chest Wall Surgery Alliance, the top ten technical achievements of this year were selected.

I. Wang Technique of Fixation Plate
After ten years of research and development and improvement, the Wang Technique for Fixed Plate has been fully matured. The Wang Technique splits the operation of fixing the steel plate into two, and then changes the operation of placing the fixation wires to indirect placement. This technique has completely simplified the fixation of the plate and has become the cornerstone of all chest wall surgical techniques. In the past year, the technique has not only taken the country by storm, but has also traveled across the ocean to foreign countries. This technique has been recognized as the greatest chest wall surgical technique of the year.

Second, the orthopedic technology of severe acute angle deformity
Sharp angle deformity is a special pathological change that exists in all kinds of chest wall deformity, which can not be corrected by general orthopedic techniques due to the over-concentration of local stress. In the past year, major breakthroughs have been made in the orthopedic techniques for this lesion, which have directly contributed to the complete correction of various complex deformities.

Reconstruction of intercostal structures
Reconstruction of the chest wall requires the completion of reconstruction of bony structures and soft tissues, and one of the important elements of soft tissue reconstruction is the reconstruction of intercostal structures. Work in this area has been advanced in the past, and the technique has been fully matured in the past year.

IV. Highly difficult technique of plate removal
In most cases, the extraction of the plate after the Nuss procedure for funnel chest is relatively simple, but in a few cases it can be very complicated and even fatal, and such procedures place extremely high demands on the operation. Previously, the technique was not perfect and could not effectively eliminate the risk. In the past year, through the unremitting efforts of experts, significant breakthroughs in surgical techniques have been achieved, and the safety factor of surgery has been significantly improved.

V. Surgical techniques for severe chest wall infection
Chest wall infection has always been the most challenging disease in chest wall surgery, and in the past, few doctors were able to master the treatment techniques for this disease. In the past year, major technological breakthroughs have been achieved in this field, and some new concepts and techniques have been successfully used in surgery, which is a gratifying achievement.

Orthopedic techniques for severe secondary thoracic deformity
The causes of secondary thoracic deformity are complex, and the most common is the thoracic deformity secondary to chronic infection in the thoracic cavity. In the past year, major breakthroughs in surgical techniques have been achieved, and surgical outcomes have improved significantly.

VII. Plastic surgery for huge chest wall defects
In the past year, chest wall surgery and plastic surgery have been deeply integrated, and a large number of advanced plastic techniques have been used in chest wall defect surgery, which has made great achievements.

VIII. Chest wall deformity correction technology for severe spinal deformity
Severe spinal deformity is almost impossible to undergo spinal surgery again, the main reason comes from the risk of surgery. If such patients are combined with significant thoracic deformity and the deformity leads to impairment of vital organ function, corrective surgery for thoracic deformity is required. This surgery is unique in nature and is palliative, but even more life-saving. It is of great significance as the successful performance of this surgery allows for the continuation of the patient's life and the improvement of his or her life treatment. Over the past year, the techniques for this type of surgery have matured.

Chest wall reconstruction for straight back syndrome
The main danger of straight back syndrome comes from the reduction of mediastinal space. Since it is impossible to change its shape by spinal surgery, the ideal method is to perform chest wall reconstruction surgery to increase the mediastinal space. The technique has been fully matured through continuous improvement over the past year.

X. Development of a new generation of chest wall molding materials
Although traditional molding materials can meet the basic needs of surgery, they all have obvious defects, the most serious will directly increase the risk of surgery. In the past year, a new generation of molding materials has been successfully developed and will be put into clinical application in the near future.
