During surgery, when the integrity of the skin is disrupted, microorganisms can enter the internal tissues causing contamination. To prevent contamination of surgical wounds, it is important to follow the principles of aseptic surgery, as otherwise there is an increased risk of infection or disease in sick animals.
Today, we describe how to prepare surgical kits.
Before packing, instruments should be placed separately in the order in which they are used by the operator. For the selection of the package, it can be chosen according to different needs. Table 1 lists the advantages and disadvantages of commonly used package materials.
Packing of instruments
The packing of instruments should follow the principle that they can be easily opened and will not break the sterility (Figure A~F).
A. Instruments are placed on a clean towel ready for packing. Place a large, unfolded parcel in front of you, place the instrument tray in the center, and cover the tray with towels along one side of the long axis of the tray.
B. Fold the single corner of the parcel under the instrument tray close to itself, pointing to its far edge. The corner line of the parcel lifts upward to facilitate opening.
C. Fold the right corner over the parcel.
D. Fold the left corner in the same way.
E. Flip the parcel and fold the last corner of the parcel on the tray, gently folding it under the two previous folded layers.
F. Pack the parcel with the second layer of cloth in the same way. Apply masking tape and a sheet of heat-sensitive sensitivity indicator tape to the last corner of the outer layer of the parcel sheet.
Folding and packing of the surgical gown
The surgical gown must be folded in such a way that it is easy to wear and does not violate the principle of sterility (as shown in pictures A to F).
A. Place the gown on a clean, flat surface. Fold the sleeves neatly toward the center of the gown with the cuffs facing the lower part of the gown.
B. Fold the sides of the gown toward the center with the side seams aligned with the sleeve seams.
C. Fold the gown in half lengthwise (with the sleeves folded into the garment).
D. Starting from the bottom edge, fold towards the neck.
E. Fold the trauma towel in half first. Place it on top of the folded scrubs, turning one corner of the trauma towel outward for use.
F. Pack the scrubs and trauma towel with 2 layers of paper or cloth.
Folding and packing the bandage
The bandage should be folded to facilitate positioning of the surgical opening site without contaminating the bandage (Figure A to F).
A. The surgical scarf is pulled out and laid flat. The long axis of the incision site is placed parallel to the body.
B. Fold the surgical towel close to the body side parallel to the opening site.
C. Turn the bandage over and fold the other side in the same manner.
D. Fold one end of the scarf toward the center (with your fingers through the opening); repeat for the other side.
E. If the bandana is properly folded, the opening of the bandana is located exactly in the middle of the ventral side.
F. Fold the bandana in half and pack it with 2 layers of paper or cloth.
