Fungal infections pose a significant public health risk and must be given high priority globally. Therefore, on October 25, 2022, WHO published a report entitled "WHO Pathogenic Fungi Priority List: Guidance on Research, Development and Public Health Behavior" (hereinafter: the List).
The List is the first systematic report on pathogenic fungi based on a global scale, providing a programmatic basis for pathogenic fungal treatment systems, research and development investment, policy development, and more. In addition to clinicians, researchers and relevant professional associations, the Inventory also hopes to attract the attention of government departments, pharmaceutical companies, and investment institutions.
In the List, a total of 19 species (classes) of pathogenic fungi are included, which basically cover the strong pathogenic fungi and special drug-resistant fungi with large impact. Based on the importance, the List divides these fungi, into three classes, and the assessment process adopts advanced analytical methods, making the final results objective and credible.
At the same time, the List gives specific recommendations for surveillance, research and development, and public health policies for pathogenic fungi.
