1、What is monkeypox
Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic infection caused by the monkeypox virus, which invades the human body through mucous membranes and broken skin.
2、The way of transmission
It is mainly transmitted through respiratory secretions, exudates, blood, other body fluids of infected animals or humans, or through bites and scratches by infected animals.
3、Main symptoms
Monkeypox is usually a self-limiting disease, with clinical symptoms similar to smallpox, but less severe, mainly manifesting as fever, rash, "two pains" (headache and muscle pain), and swollen lymph nodes. Symptoms usually last 14-21 days, and patients usually heal on their own.
4、Epidemic area
Since May 2022, a large number of cases of monkeypox have been detected in some countries in non-endemic areas, and interpersonal transmission has occurred.
5、Epidemic population
The population is generally susceptible, with a high mortality rate in young children and immunocompromised individuals, and a degree of cross-protection against monkeypox virus in those who have been previously vaccinated against smallpox.
6、Incubation period
Generally 5-21 days, mostly 6-13 days.
