This disease is more common in young women and causes liver inflammation. Weakness, fatigue and discomfort are the most common symptoms.
Autoimmune hepatitis is a rare chronic disease that affects the liver and is not infectious.
Last Friday (19), a 20-year-old five-a-side football player died of illness. Since the beginning of this month, she has been hospitalized because she was diagnosed with this hepatitis, and her condition is serious.
Disease is more common in young women
Autoimmune hepatitis can occur at any age, but according to the Brazilian liver Institute (ibrafig), it most often affects women in their 30s.
The immune system of patients with this hepatitis recognizes hepatocytes as foreign cells and therefore attacks them. The consequences are chronic inflammation of the organs, the development of liver fibrosis, which is a scar on the liver, and cirrhosis.
Autoimmune hepatitis occurs in people with genetic predisposition and can be manifested through contact with bacteria, viruses, drugs or other environmental related factors.
Even so, according to ibrafig, it is not common for people from the same family to suffer from this disease.
Autoimmune hepatitis is curable
Autoimmune hepatitis is treated with immunosuppressive drugs that reduce the activity of the autoimmune system and fight liver inflammation.
Women whose condition is under control can have children as long as they have strict medical follow-up during pregnancy and after the birth of their children.
