Why is it so "cold" in the operating room?
2024-01-25

When we walk into an operating room in a hospital, we may feel a little cooler, or even a little colder. This is because according to the Operating Room Nursing Practice Guidelines, the temperature in the operating room should be maintained at 21-25°C. However, in clinical practice, some patients often wonder, "I'm afraid of the cold. However, there are often patients in the clinic who wonder, "I'm afraid of the cold, so why can't the temperature be raised?" In fact, there are more scientific and humane considerations behind the low-temperature settings in the operating room.

First of all, lowering the temperature in the operating room helps to reduce the reproduction of bacteria. Bacterial growth and reproduction are affected to some extent by the temperature of the environment. Lower temperatures can limit bacterial activity, thereby reducing the risk of infection. Secondly, a cooler environment helps maintain the patient's body temperature and reduces blood loss from the surgical site, which helps the procedure go smoothly.

In addition, many surgical devices have certain temperature requirements. Maintaining a cooler environment in the operating room also helps surgical equipment to function properly and avoid malfunction due to overheating. Finally, lower temperatures also prevent surgeons from sweating, reducing the fatigue that prolonged surgeries can bring to healthcare professionals and allowing them to concentrate more on their surgical operations.
