The operating bed is so narrow, will I fall off?
2023-07-30

The department conducted a first aid drill training, and I played the role of a patient. Lying on the operating table for the first time, I personally felt that the operating bed was really narrow. It was so narrow that I was a little dizzy and had nowhere to put my hands. The bed board was also very hard, so hard that I wanted to turn over, but I was worried that if I did, I would fall off the bed. I waited until the drill was over and I still felt dizzy.

Two days ago, there was a woman in labor who was preparing for a cesarean section, and when she was lying on the surgical bed, she asked me, "Your bed is so narrow, is it safe?

Surgical bed is actually a surgical table, which supports the patient during the operation and allows the surgeon to facilitate the operation, and can be adjusted according to the surgeon's needs, sometimes the head is high and the feet are low, sometimes the left side is tilted, sometimes the surgical table is elevated, and sometimes it is also necessary to place a special position such as a folding knife position or amputation position, etc. No matter how the position is placed, it is not necessary to adjust the operating table. Regardless of the position, we have to ensure that the patient can not shake, or even fall off the bed. Especially awake patients or general anesthesia awakening patients. Sober patients can understand after communication, and general anesthesia patients wake up sometimes not awake and body movement recovery, if not fixed firmly, the patient is very likely to fall out of bed.

We first look at the basic parameters of the configuration of the surgical bed: width is generally > 0.5m, length is generally > 2m, the height adjustment range of 0.6-0.95m, and also before and after the tilt, left and right tilt, the back plate folded, leg plate folded, head plate folded and other different angles. Indeed, although the length of the surgical bed is enough and can be lengthened, but it is not wide enough to allow an adult to lie flat with his hands close to his side. In the case of fat patients, the hands can only be placed on the chest or abdomen.

The surgical bed is very narrow, when lying on it, you have to touch both sides of the bed with both hands, lie in the middle of the bed, and don't move around when you are not allowed to move around, as it will be bad if you fall down.

Usually, no matter what kind of surgery, the position is very important. Commonly used positions are lying position, left and right lateral position, amputation position, prone position, beach chair position and so on. Even after positioning, it is possible to change the movement of the surgical bed according to the needs of the surgery. This is done to make it easier for the surgeon to perform the surgery, but also to ensure that the patient cannot swing around and fall out of bed.
