N95 and KN95, what is the difference in the protective effect of different masks?
1970-01-01

Although the appearance is very similar to medical surgical masks, the defense ability for viruses is not enough, which may cause defense omission.

Medical surgical masks
These masks have a filter paper in the middle, so they can act as a filter. Medical surgical masks can protect against Neoplastic infections in daily life, even in public places and hospitals where there are many people. However, it is not suitable to be applied to the daily care of newly crowned infected people or suspected cases.

Medical protective masks
It is the legendary "pig nose" during the SARS epidemic. In terms of preventing viral infections alone, the effectiveness is comparable to that of N95/KN95 masks. But in China, these masks are relatively less common than N95/KN95 masks.

Medical surgical masks that meet the requirements of the new YY0469-2011 standard have a barrier to the bacteria discharged from the wearer's breathing and speaking processes, with a bacterial filtration efficiency of 95% or more and a particulate filtration rate of 30% or more. So from the point of view of daily protection, it is enough to choose medical surgical masks!
N95/KN95 masks
Simply put, the national standard is no N95, N95 mask implementation standards are developed by Europe and the United States, the domestic standard N95 mask protection effect is consistent with KN95.

In addition, according to the notice of the National Health Commission Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention, KN95, FFP2 and higher level anti-particle masks (without valve) of the same level as N95 also have the ability to protect against epidemics.

Why are many products with reference to the national standard also called "N95" masks?
In fact, KN95 masks produced with reference to our standards are similar in performance to N95 masks produced by NIOSH standards in the United States, so they are sometimes called N95 masks. If we put it differently, N95 and KN95 are both called "N95 type" masks, then it is easy to understand.

What is the meaning behind the letters and numbers?
Referring to the NOISH standard in the United States: N means not oil resistant, and R (oil resistant) and P (oil resistant).
95 refers to the particle filtration rate of ≥ 95%, there are 99 (filtration rate ≥ 99%), 100 (filtration rate ≥ 99.97%)

It can be seen that the combination of different letters and numbers, just like the building blocks: N95 is the non-oil particles filtering rate of 95% or more; P99 is the non-oil and oily particles filtering rate of 99% or more, and so on ......

What is the difference between KN95 and N95?
In fact, the main difference between KN95 and N95 is that N95 masks have standard requirements for sterility, blood permeation and other dimensions, and they are suitable for professional medical scenarios. While KN95 masks are used for particle protection and are suitable for non-medical scenarios, the filtration requirements and protection levels of these two masks are comparable.
